The Senate and House of Representatives face public backlash from Nigerians for allocating billions of naira towards vehicle expenses amid the nation’s high debt and economic turmoil.
The Nigerian Senate defended its decision to purchase N160 million worth of SUVs for its members during challenging times, citing the durability of the chosen brand.
However, this move has faced criticism from the public, questioning the prioritization of such expenses amid the country’s economic difficulties and high indebtedness.
During a Tuesday briefing in Abuja, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Services, Sunday Karimi, emphasized the necessity for durable roads, attributing the need to the poor road conditions.
Karimi questioned why ministers with multiple Land Cruisers, Prado, and other vehicles are not subjected to the same scrutiny, asking, “Why us?
These vehicles that you see, go to Nigeria roads today. If I go home once to my senatorial district, I come back spending a lot on my vehicles because our roads are bad,” he said.
He said they chose the Toyota Land Cruiser because of its cost and durability.
