Nigeria’s Crisis Is Leadership Failure, Not Lack of Resources — Peter Obi
The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has stated that Nigeria’s numerous challenges are largely self-inflicted, blaming the nation’s political leadership rather than poverty for its underdevelopment.
Obi said the country’s problems stem from poor governance and mismanagement of abundant resources by the political class, stressing that Nigeria is richly endowed but has failed to translate its wealth into improved living standards for citizens.
He made this assertion on Sunday while speaking at a thanksgiving service held at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Aremo, Ibadan, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Oyo State.
Addressing the congregation, the former Anambra State governor urged Nigerians to continually pray for their leaders, noting that divine guidance is crucial for politicians entrusted with public resources.
“I make a request to Nigerians. Please do remember us politicians in your prayers. We are the problem of Nigeria. Nigeria is not a poor country; it is poorly governed,” Obi said.
He further appealed for spiritual support for leaders to develop the right mindset towards governance, emphasising that responsible use of public funds would significantly change the nation’s fortunes.
“Remember us in your prayers that God should touch our hearts to use public money for public good. If we do this, Nigeria will be good. May God bless all of you and bless your families always,” he added.
Obi also reflected on the historical and developmental significance of Ibadan, describing the city as a cradle of knowledge and a place that has shaped many Nigerians over the years.
“It is always an honour to be in Ibadan. I was here on Tuesday to visit the university, and I was telling someone that Ibadan is a very historic town where many of us were formed. It is a city of knowledge and a city of hope,” he said.
Commending the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde, Obi noted that Ibadan and Oyo State have witnessed remarkable transformation and infrastructural upliftment under the current government.
“Ibadan has experienced major upliftment under Governor Seyi Makinde,” he remarked.
He expressed optimism about the future of Oyo State, offering prayers for sustained progress as the state marks its golden jubilee.
“As we celebrate these 50 years, I pray that the next 50 years of this great state will be exemplary. May God Almighty continue to bless our governor, his family and all members of his team,” Obi stated.
The former governor also recalled his early involvement with the Makinde administration, expressing appreciation for the governor’s leadership style and inclusive approach to governance.
“I was here at the onset of his government, as one of those invited to address his commissioners, and I thank him for his exceptional love,” he concluded.
