Senator Sharafadeen Alli (APC-Oyo South) has significantly contributed to improving the educational standards in Oyo State by sponsoring the WAEC fees and granting scholarships to 54 students.
The scholarships and financial awards were announced at an award ceremony in Ibadan on Thursday, marking the end of a four-week free holiday coaching program organized by the Good Governance and Development Initiative (GGDI).
This program, under Senator Alli’s sponsorship, involved 1,635 students across 18 centers in Oyo South Senatorial District.
Highlighting the crucial role of education in society, Senator Alli pledged to work alongside the government and educational bodies to further support academically outstanding students.
He emphasized the society’s duty to recognize and encourage such achievements.
Senator Alli disclosed that the project’s total investment, which included teacher salaries, WAEC fees, and cash prizes for top students, was around 15 to 20 million naira.
Dr. Yemi Farounbi, a former Nigerian Ambassador to the Philippines, praised Senator Alli and GGDI at the event for their commitment to investing in the future leaders’ education.
He noted the significance of quality education as the most valuable gift for a child.
The event also brought attention to the need for educational improvements in Oyo State, which is currently ranked 26th out of 36 states in WAEC ratings.
Alhaji Bello Oladeji, the event chairman, expressed concern over this and gratitude towards GGDI and Senator Alli for addressing the issue.
Prof. Ishiaq Omotosho, the GGDI Coordinator, commended Senator Alli for his generosity and dedication to the state’s advancement, noting that the senator covered all project expenses.
He mentioned that Senator Alli plans to extend the program across Oyo State and introduce additional initiatives like vocational training and adult education to support market men and women in transitioning to a cashless economy.
Samuel Fakunle, a program beneficiary, voiced his determination to excel in his WAEC exams and make a significant impact on the world.
Parents and teachers involved in the program expressed their gratitude for Senator Alli’s initiative, recognizing its potential to transform the state’s educational landscape.
The Senator also plans to expand the program throughout Oyo State, incorporating both physical and virtual formats to benefit more participants.
