The African heritage has been hailed as a powerful force for fostering unity and development across the continent.
During the 2023 Cultural Day event organized by the African Studies Students Association (ASSA) at the Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan, Dr Afolayan spoke about the importance of embracing African heritage as a means to achieve unity and development in the 21st century. She commended the institute for its commitment to promoting African culture and preserving African heritage.
Dr Afolayan, an alumnus of the institute, highlighted the significance of cultural identity in distinguishing one society from another and explaining their social norms, values, and way of life. She stressed the importance of carrying forward our heritage from one generation to the next, as it is an integral part of who we are.
In her lecture, Dr Afolayan acknowledged that African indigenous societies were once flourishing centers of civilization. However, external influences over the years have distorted, weakened, and exploited Africa’s heritage. She attributed many of the socio-economic challenges faced by the continent to the abandonment of traditional culture and values.
Dr Afolayan expressed concern over the fact that despite Africa’s rich culture and heritage, many African countries continue to struggle with development.
She argued that the solutions to Africa’s problems lie within its own heritage, such as utilizing indigenous practices of social engineering and development. Two examples she cited were the ‘Omoluabi’ concept in Yoruba culture, which emphasizes good character and citizenship, and the Ubuntu concept in Zulu culture, which symbolizes solidarity and kinship.
Dr Afolayan urged the young audience at the symposium to take pride in African literature, history, language, fashion, cuisine, arts, and music.
She firmly believed that if Africans embrace their culture and showcase their heritage, the continent has all the necessary ingredients to achieve greatness.
