Ibadan Tennis Club to Honor Governor Makinde as Grand Patron in Centennial Celebration

As the Ibadan Tennis Club marks its centenary milestone, it is set to honor the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, by appointing him as the Grand Patron of the club. This prestigious investiture will take place during a grand Centennial Dinner scheduled for September 2025. The announcement was made as part of the club’s celebrations marking 100 years of excellence in sports, community impact, and social life.

The club’s President, Dr. Oladipupo Sule, shared the exciting plans for the centenary celebration in a press briefing with newsmen in Ibadan. He described the 100-year anniversary as a significant threshold that not only celebrates a century of history but also provides an opportunity to honor the legacy of past members while setting the stage for future generations.

In his address, Dr. Sule emphasized that the centenary celebrations would span the entire year and include a variety of events. The first major highlight of the year was the unveiling of the club’s centennial logo and insignia, an event that symbolizes the proud history and vibrant future of the club.

“To commemorate this significant anniversary, the club has planned a series of exciting activities,” Dr. Sule said. “Among these will be a Centennial Endowment Luncheon on Saturday, May 31, 2025. The luncheon will serve as a fundraiser for critical legacy projects aimed at enhancing the club’s infrastructure and legacy.”

The planned legacy projects are ambitious and include the rehabilitation and modernization of the club’s main hall, expanding the parking area, relocating the club kitchen, installing new bath and changing rooms, and constructing a new badminton hall. These projects aim to upgrade the club’s facilities and maintain its status as a key player in both local and national sports.

Dr. Sule also revealed that the centenary celebrations would feature a high-profile lecture on financial technology, delivered by Dr. Ademola Adeleke, the Deputy Director at the Central Bank of Nigeria. This lecture will be one of the highlights of the centenary events, providing valuable insights into the influence of financial technology on various sectors, including sports.

In addition to the infrastructural developments, the club plans to organize a variety of sporting tournaments throughout the year. These will include inter-club and interstate competitions, designed to foster sportsmanship, unity, and friendly competition among club members and other athletes.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports, along with the Ministry of Information, is expected to play a key role in supporting and promoting the club’s centenary activities. These partnerships are seen as crucial in ensuring the success of the various programs and ensuring widespread public participation.

As part of its social responsibility efforts, the club will also engage in charity initiatives aimed at uplifting the less privileged members of society. In collaboration with organizations such as the Lions Club and Rotary Club, the Ibadan Tennis Club seeks to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those in need.

Dr. Sule extended an open invitation to both the public and the Oyo State government to join the club in celebrating this remarkable achievement. He also called for collaboration and financial support from the Oyo State government and neighboring states where the club has had a positive impact over the years.

“We appeal to people of means and goodwill to come forward and support a number of legacy projects that will carry their names for generations to come,” Dr. Sule urged. “This is the least that a club with such a rich history, having produced both state and national champions, can expect from the society it has served for 100 years.”

Dr. Sule also paid tribute to the club’s past members, acknowledging their contributions to the club’s success and to the sporting community at large. “We salute the legacy of our forebears in the Ibadan Tennis Club. We are proud to have received this golden baton, and we intend to carry it forward with strength and determination as we pass it on to the next generation,” he said.

The President of the club also emphasized the importance of the club’s commitment to maintaining a high standard of excellence, not only in sports but in creating a conducive environment for socialization, recreation, and intellectual exchange. “Ours is proudly a private club with an enviable public record. We will remain true to our vision of providing and sustaining an environment conducive to recreation, sports, socialization, and intelligent interaction,” he affirmed.

The unveiling of the club’s centennial insignia included the announcement of the theme for the celebrations: “A CENTURY OF SPORTING AND RECREATIONAL EXCELLENCE: MORE PROMISES TO KEEP.” This theme reflects the club’s recognition of the contributions made by its members to both the sporting world and societal well-being over the past 100 years.

“It’s not just about what we’ve achieved in the past but about our commitment to doing more in the future,” Dr. Sule explained. “This theme is a testament to who we are, what we stand for, and the promises we intend to keep moving forward. The club is more than just a place for sports; it is a hub for community, camaraderie, and progress.”

Looking ahead, the Ibadan Tennis Club aims to build on its century-long legacy by continuing to provide a space for recreation, sports, and social engagement. As they celebrate this milestone, they also recognize the need to evolve and adapt to the changing times, ensuring that the club remains relevant and impactful in the years to come.

The club’s commitment to maintaining a legacy of excellence is reflected not only in its centenary celebrations but also in its ongoing efforts to improve and expand its facilities. These improvements, combined with the strong sense of community and tradition, will ensure that the Ibadan Tennis Club remains a cornerstone of sporting and social life in the region for many more years to come.

As the Ibadan Tennis Club prepares to honor Governor Seyi Makinde as its Grand Patron, it is clear that the next 100 years will be just as exciting and impactful as the first century of its existence. With a strong foundation and a forward-thinking approach, the club is poised to continue making significant contributions to sports, recreation, and society at large.
