The National Orientation Agency (NOA), Oyo State Directorate, is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives during a stampede at the children’s funfair carnival at Basorun Islamic High School, Ibadan, on Wednesday, December 18, 2024. The event, organized by the Women in Need of Guidance and Support (WINGS) Foundation, has left the Oyo State community in mourning.

This was revealed in a statement made available to journalists by Mr. Isiaka Kehinde and personally signed by the State Director, Dr. Mrs. Kemi Afolayan.

Dr. Afolayan expressed her condolences, stating, “In this difficult time, the NOA extends its heartfelt sympathies to the Oyo State Government, the families of the victims, and their loved ones. We also wish a swift recovery to the injured and stand in solidarity with them as they navigate this painful ordeal.”

The response from residents of Ibadan has been clear, with widespread calls for accountability and the prosecution of those responsible for the tragedy. In light of this, the Agency calls on the Oyo State Government to strengthen oversight of events organized by foundations and other groups, ensuring strict compliance with safety protocols and event management standards to prevent future incidents.

“We commend the Oyo State Government for its swift and decisive response,” Dr. Afolayan continued. “The quick deployment of a response team, timely transportation of victims to medical facilities, and activation of emergency medical support underscore the government’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens. We also acknowledge the efforts of the Commissioner for Health and other relevant authorities for their swift intervention in providing assistance and maintaining public safety.”

In response to the tragedy, Dr. Afolayan, along with staff from the Ibadan North Local Government Office, visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment. This visit reflects the NOA’s commitment to understanding the incident firsthand and working toward measures to prevent future tragedies.

The NOA emphasized the importance of meticulous planning and coordination when organizing events, especially those involving children, the elderly, and other vulnerable groups. “We urge event organizers, government agencies, and community leaders to prioritize safety at all times,” Dr. Afolayan said.

As the community reflects on this tragic event, the NOA calls for collective action to ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens, particularly children. The NOA Oyo State Directorate remains committed to fostering a culture of responsibility, accountability, and proactive governance in every aspect of the community.
