The Oyo State Government has declared the purported removal of Dr. Saka Adegbite Balogun as the Balogun of Ogbomoso by the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, illegal and contrary to the state’s chieftaincy law.

The government maintained that the power to appoint, suspend or depose a recognised Part II chieftaincy holder rests exclusively with the state governor.

In a press release issued on Friday, October 23, 2026, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Ademola Ojo, said the purported removal was inconsistent with the provisions of the Oyo State Chiefs Law.

Ojo cited Section 26(1) of the Chiefs Law of Oyo State, 2000, which vests the authority to appoint, suspend and depose a Part II recognised chieftaincy holder in the governor.

He described the reported action by the Soun of Ogbomoso as an aberration and an action unknown to the existing law governing the operation of traditional councils in the state.

The commissioner consequently reaffirmed Dr. Balogun as the duly recognised Balogun of Ogbomoso and urged members of the public to disregard reports of his removal.

The statement comes amid reports concerning the chieftaincy position, with the state government insisting that any action involving the suspension or deposition of a recognised Part II chieftaincy holder must comply with the provisions of the law.
