In a one-day conference held on Friday with the theme “How Can Women Shine Amidst Economic Hardship?” at the Senior Staff Club, University of Ibadan, the Oyo State Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Dr. Olukemi Afolayan, highlighted practical steps for women to thrive despite economic challenges. The event was organized by the Stand Up for Women Society, Oyo State Branch, a gender advocacy group.

As the guest speaker, Dr. Afolayan emphasized that women are significantly impacted by economic hardship, marked by extreme poverty and hunger. She noted that the current economic challenges are not unique to Nigeria but are felt globally, partly due to the effects of COVID-19.

Dr. Afolayan outlined several practical steps for women to ensure they shine amidst economic hardship:

1. **Gainful Employment and Financial Independence**: Regardless of the amount, earning one’s own money can provide security and protection against unforeseen circumstances. There is dignity in labor, no matter the scale.

2. **Utilizing Government Programs**: Women should take advantage of skill acquisition and empowerment programs provided by the government, often available at minimal or no cost.

3. **Continuous Personal Development**: Enhancing skills through formal education, vocational training, or starting a business is crucial. It’s never too late to improve one’s status.

4. **Joining Cooperative Societies**: These can help inculcate traditional saving habits, provide access to loans, and enable bulk purchases of foodstuffs at lower costs.

5. **Avoiding High-Interest Loans**: Steering clear of high-interest borrowing from online loan platforms and ‘Shylock’ lenders is essential to avoid financial ruin.

6. **Embracing Additional Income Streams**: Home gardening, domestic animal rearing, or online businesses can provide additional income.

7. **Modest Living and Self-Care**: Dressing modestly within one’s means and prioritizing self-care and health are vital components of self-preservation.

8. **Prioritizing Personal Happiness**: Ensuring personal happiness and well-being is essential, as it directly contributes to one’s ability to thrive in adverse circumstances.

9. **Focusing on Children**: Providing a nurturing environment for children is paramount, despite the challenging economic situation.

Dr. Afolayan reiterated that whatever affects a woman affects her family and society. Therefore, it is crucial for women to be in good condition to radiate strength and shine for the general well-being of their families, society, and even the nation.

The event attracted numerous dignitaries, including representatives from various women organizations, journalists, lawyers, and students.
