In a recent press conference, Dr. Kemi Afolayan, the Oyo State Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), highlighted the crucial role of the National Identity Project (NIP) in fostering Nigeria’s development. During a live discussion on Fresh 105.9 FM’s ‘Situation Room’ with Mayor Isaac Brown, she elaborated on the objectives and benefits of this initiative.
Dr. Afolayan emphasized the importance of public trust in government efforts and encouraged citizens to actively engage with the NIP. She noted that the project is designed to promote national unity while addressing the various challenges facing the country today. By fostering a shared identity among Nigerians, the NIP aims to lay the foundation for a more cohesive society.
The Director outlined the twofold approach of the National Identity Project. Firstly, it seeks to guide those in leadership roles towards more effective governance, ensuring they are equipped to tackle the nation’s pressing issues. Secondly, it establishes clear expectations for citizens, emphasizing their role in the social contract with the government.
Addressing some of the skepticism surrounding the agency, Dr. Afolayan discussed the strides made under the leadership of the new Director-General, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu. She pointed out that the previous challenges faced by NOA are being systematically addressed, thanks to the proactive measures being implemented.
Dr. Afolayan reassured the public of the government’s renewed commitment to supporting the NOA and its initiatives. She explained that the National Identity Project has already received the necessary approval from the Federal Executive Council, paving the way for various sensitization efforts currently underway.
In her discussion, Dr. Afolayan introduced the National Values Charter, which outlines seven core promises that citizens should expect from their leaders. These values include equality, democracy, entrepreneurship, peace, freedom, inclusivity, and meritocracy, all essential for the country’s progress.
Moreover, she stressed the importance of a corresponding citizen code of conduct. This code encourages principles such as discipline, accountability, environmental awareness, and resilience, urging citizens to take responsibility for their role in nation-building.
Emphasizing the slogan “We Must build Nigerians to build Nigeria,” Dr. Afolayan called for a united effort among citizens to restore dignity to the nation. She urged individuals to respect national symbols and actively contribute to societal development.
In recognition of local media’s role in promoting these values, Dr. Afolayan commended Fresh FM for its commitment to value reorientation. She presented an award to Mayor Isaac Brown and the station, acknowledging their efforts in advocating for nation-building initiatives and fostering a culture of civic responsibility.
As the sensitization campaign progresses, Dr. Afolayan expressed optimism about the impact of the National Identity Project. She believes that with sustained public engagement and government support, the initiative can significantly contribute to a more stable and prosperous Nigeria.
In conclusion, Dr. Afolayan’s message resonated with the audience, urging them to embrace the National Identity Project as a vital step toward collective progress. By reinforcing trust in government and encouraging active participation, the Oyo NOA aims to cultivate a strong sense of national identity and shared purpose among Nigerians.
