Dr. Olukemi Afolayan, Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Oyo State, has reassured Nigerian students of the government’s strong commitment to ensuring a seamless and transparent process for accessing the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). Speaking during a live broadcast on the popular BOSENLO program on BCOS Studio, Dr. Afolayan provided an update on the loan scheme, addressing key concerns and outlining efforts to streamline the disbursement process.

According to Dr. Afolayan, over 500,000 students are currently benefiting from the NELFUND program, with nearly 50 billion Naira already disbursed to eligible students. This substantial figure demonstrates the government’s ongoing support for students pursuing higher education across the country, offering critical financial aid to ease their academic journey.

She emphasized that despite some challenges, the government remains dedicated to ensuring that the loan disbursement process is smooth and transparent. Dr. Afolayan assured the public that the NOA, alongside other relevant government bodies, is working tirelessly to overcome any obstacles hindering students’ access to the funds, reflecting the government’s proactive stance on supporting higher education.

A major concern addressed by Dr. Afolayan was the issue of corruption, which could potentially disrupt the equitable distribution of the loan. She assured Nigerians that the NOA is actively investigating corrupt practices within institutions administering the loan and among individuals involved in fraudulent activities. Dr. Afolayan urged the public to report any misconduct, stressing the importance of keeping the system clean and efficient.

Dr. Afolayan also provided clarification on the loan application process, advising students who have already been verified to remain patient as they will soon receive their funds. For those who have not yet been verified, she encouraged them to reapply to ensure their applications are processed correctly. She emphasized that the verification and approval process is thorough to ensure only eligible students benefit from the program.

Furthermore, Dr. Afolayan highlighted the importance of timely repayment to maintain the sustainability of the loan scheme. She noted that prompt repayment ensures that future students can also benefit from the program, making it a sustainable source of support for generations to come. The director urged students to be mindful of their responsibility to repay the loans on time.

In conclusion, Dr. Afolayan reaffirmed the commitment of Mallam Lanre Issa Onilu, NOA’s Director General, who has assured that all qualified applicants will benefit from the government’s education loan initiative. She called on the public to actively report any irregularities, reinforcing the need for collective efforts to maintain the integrity and effectiveness of the loan program.
