On this Tuesday, the 21st of November, I presented a motion in the Senate to immortalize and arrange a state burial for the late Taiwo Akinkunmi, OFR, famously known as ‘Mr. Flag,’ the visionary creator of the Nigerian National Flag.

His demise on August 29, 2023, prompted me to seek acknowledgment and tribute from the esteemed Senate for the remarkable contributions of Taiwo Akinkunmi, a creative genius who crafted the enduring symbol of Nigeria’s unity, strength, and identity.

I proposed to the Senate that we pay tribute to the late Mr. Taiwo Akinkunmi by observing a minute of silence, mourning his passing, immortalizing his memory, and arranging a dignified state burial for this national hero.

In response, the Senate resolved to honor him by observing a minute of silence, expressing condolences to his family, and acknowledging the loss.

It recognised the late Akinkunmi’s exceptional and patriotic service to Nigeria through his design of the Nigerian national flag

The Senate urged the Federal Government to immortalize the memory of Mr. Taiwo Akinkunmi OFR, “Mr. Flag” by establishing a befitting and enduring tribute in his honour.

honoring his legacy with the naming of a prominent national monument, institution, or public space, along with the establishment of an educational program to enlighten current and future generations about his pivotal role in Nigeria’s history.

Additionally, the Senate called upon the Federal Government to grant Mr. Taiwo Akinkunimi a state burial, recognizing his substantial contributions as a national hero and a symbol of our collective unity and pride.

To secure Mr. Akinkunmi’s legacy, the Senate urges the Federal Government to back initiatives documenting his life and accomplishments through literature, documentaries, and exhibits for historical preservation and education.

Additionally, the Senate calls on the government to promptly immortalize his name and grant him a state burial befitting a national hero, ensuring his memory inspires future generations of Nigerians.

Resolved, honoring these endeavors will cultivate a spirit of patriotism and dedication to serving our future generations, fostering unity among the people of Nigeria.
