UNICEF is urging women and faith-based groups to increase the uptake of vaccines in order to eradicate polio. To support this effort, women groups in Oyo state have been given the task of spreading the message and making polio eradication achievable.
Dr Iyun Adanito, during an enlightening program facilitated by the National Orientation Agency, emphasized the importance of taking polio vaccines for children to mitigate associated health risks. The women groups were also reminded to avoid any negative religious influences that may discourage them from heeding the call, as it is unacceptable to use religion as a basis for refusing vaccines.
The One day workshop, organized by the Oyo state Directorate of the National Orientation Agency, addressed various factors that hinder the reduction of polio, such as incorrect data computation, inflated figures, religious bias, and illiteracy. The program also provided practical solutions, including the use of group networks, combating fake news on social media, continuous training, and advocating for enabling laws to strengthen compliance.
S O Olatunji further enlightened the women groups on the importance of basic health hygiene, vaccines intake, medical check-ups, antenatal care services, and the first 1000 days of a child. He advised women to prioritize their health and avoid the risk of cervical cancer, which can be contracted through HPV during intercourse.
Mr Posi Adejobi, Assistant Director of Programs at Oyo NOA, urged stakeholders to use the program to equip themselves against polio-related hazards and to contact their nearest NOA office to improve efficiency and ensure that all children in the state receive the vaccine.
Dr Olukemi Afolayan, the Oyo State Director of the National Orientation Agency, advised stakeholders to take the campaign for vaccine acceptance seriously and encouraged women to continue spreading UNICEF’s health advocacy messages.
The workshop was attended by members of FOMWAN and WOWICAN groups, representing the two major religions.
