The Oyo State Directorate of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) hosted a significant Ramadan lecture on Thursday, March 13th, at the agency’s conference hall in Agodi, Ibadan. The event, which included a round of national prayers, focused on the theme of “Duty of Care to Fellow Humans in Time of Need” and aimed to highlight the importance of mutual care and compassion in nation-building.

The lecture, attended by public office holders, national security personnel, and members of the public, underscored the vital role that caring for one another plays in strengthening societal bonds and promoting national development. The event also featured prayers for the agency, public officials, and the general well-being of Nigeria’s citizens.

In her welcome address, Dr. Olukemi Afolayan, the Oyo State Director of NOA, explained that the lecture was part of the agency’s ongoing National Value Charter campaign. This initiative represents a partnership between the government and citizens to foster positive social values. Dr. Afolayan emphasized that a true spirit of love and care, demonstrated through selflessness and kindness, is essential for the country’s progress.

“If we genuinely love one another and adhere to an ethics of care, this nation will be better for it,” Dr. Afolayan stated, stressing that collective efforts towards caring for each other could significantly improve the country’s social fabric.

The lecture was delivered by Dr. Adams Olufemi Akewula, who captivated the audience with his presentation on the Islamic perspective of duty of care. Titled “Duty of Care to Fellow Humans in Time of Need – The Islamic Perspective,” Dr. Akewula highlighted that the act of giving care to others is a divine responsibility bestowed by God. He emphasized that care should be extended not only to family members but also to neighbors, colleagues, and the less fortunate.

“Always remember that the precondition for having a sound sleep is for your neighbors not to stay awake at night,” Dr. Akewula remarked, urging the audience to reflect on their actions and ensure that their acts of care extend beyond their immediate circles.

Dr. Waheed Popoola, the Zonal Director of NTA Ibadan Network, also offered a goodwill message during the event. He urged the public to show care and compassion to their neighbors, regardless of their ethnic or religious backgrounds. Dr. Popoola emphasized the importance of fostering harmonious relationships within communities, as the people around us are often our first point of contact in life.

“The people around us form our first point of contact at all times,” Dr. Popoola stated. “We must show love and care, as emphasized in the Holy Quran, because it is through our relationships with others that we build a stronger society.”

Other notable figures who attended the event and shared their goodwill messages included the Iyaloja of Ibadanland, Alhaja Iswat Oyinlola Ameringun, Chief Imam of Ibadan North, Alhaji Busari J.P., and representatives from the State Commandant of the Road Safety Corps, among others. Their messages reinforced the importance of unity, love, and support for one another as a foundation for a peaceful and prosperous nation.

The event culminated in a prayer session, where invited ustas prayed for peace and stability in Nigeria, as well as for the continued success of the NOA. Special prayers were also offered for Mallam Lanre Isaa-Onilu, the Director-General of NOA, in recognition of his significant contributions to the agency since assuming his role.

As the event concluded, the attendees reflected on the powerful message of care and compassion, with many expressing a renewed commitment to supporting their neighbors and communities. The Oyo NOA Ramadan lecture served as a timely reminder that acts of kindness and a sense of duty towards others are integral to building a stronger, more united nation.

The successful event was well received, and it is hoped that the values discussed will resonate with attendees and encourage more acts of care throughout the state and beyond. The NOA’s dedication to promoting national values remains steadfast, with the agency continuing to serve as a key player in fostering a spirit of unity and social responsibility across Nigeria.
