Senator Sharafadeen Alli of the APC party representing Oyo South has stated that the joint committee of the 10th National Assembly on electoral matters is diligently working towards improving the nation’s electoral process.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr Akeem Abas, Senator Alli commended the improvements made in the last general election compared to previous ones.
He specifically mentioned the passing of the 2022 Electoral law, which introduced the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) as a game changer.
Senator Alli assured the public that the committee will focus on enhancing the technology used in the electoral process and implementing effective guidelines.
He emphasized the need to ensure that the BVAS machine stores data securely and prevents any alteration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Additionally, Senator Alli stated that the electoral law does not currently require INEC to upload results on a portal, but they aim to mandate its implementation in future elections.
The 10th Senate plans to host town hall meetings to gather public opinion on electoral laws and make necessary improvements.
They also aim to expedite the resolution of pre-election and election-related matters to ensure a seamless process. Furthermore, Senator Alli expressed support for unbundling the functions of INEC and making the electoral system more transparent.
While acknowledging that no election is perfect, he believes that continuous enhancement of the electoral process can bring Nigeria closer to achieving a 90 percent level of perfection.
Finally, Senator Alli praised the well-organized and fair Liberian presidential election and called on Nigerians to embody the same level of patriotism as they strive for a better country.
