The ‘Yoruba Regional Alliance’, a self-determination organization, has sounded the alarm about the growing threat of anarchy in Yorubaland, highlighting recent events in the area as increasingly alarming and troubling for the inhabitants.
The organization has pointed out that Yorubaland appears to be a prime target for jihadists, ethnic extremists, and bandits. They noted that those responsible for the horrific incidents in Igangan and Owo have not yet been captured or punished.
During a press conference in Ibadan, the group’s leaders, Bashorun Kunle Adesokan and Arch. Opeoluwa Akinola, expressed their concerns, suggesting that those behind these heinous crimes seem to be either eluding the law or being shielded by law enforcement.
Their statement included: “On June 5, 2021, armed assailants presumed to be bandits attacked Igangan in Oyo State under cover of darkness, committing heinous acts of terror against the unsuspecting community. The aftermath was tragic, with more than fifty residents killed, numerous women becoming widows, and over a hundred children left fatherless.
“Similarly, on June 5, 2022, a horrific mass shooting and bombing occurred during a church service in Owo, Ondo State, claiming the lives of over seventy individuals.
“Recently, on January 16, 2024, an explosive device believed to be a bomb exploded in Old Bodija estate in Ibadan, Oyo State’s capital, resulting in fatalities, injuries, and displacement of residents.”
They further advised: “Those concerned about the safety of their livestock should invest in land for ranches to securely contain their animals. We warn the Federal Government that ignoring this situation could lead to inevitable anarchy, which is unacceptable under any circumstances.”
